On January 31, 2025, the fight against cancer took a major step forward with the official kickoff of the First European Cluster on Understanding Tumour-Host Interactions. Backed by the EU Cancer Mission, this initiative unites top researchers, clinicians, and experts to advance cutting-edge research on tumor-host interactions. As part of Europe’s Beating Cancer Plan, it aims to improve cancer prevention, diagnosis, and treatment, aligning with the Cancer Mission’s goal of benefiting over 3 million people by 2030.
The cluster integrates six groundbreaking research projects under the “Understanding Cancer” objective, focusing on genetic risks, environmental factors, personalized medicine, and immunotherapy. These projects will generate critical insights to shape future treatment strategies and inform public health policies:
THRIVE – Tumour-host interactions in liver cancer of childhood and adults. In which ELPA is part of the consortium.
GLIOMATCH – The malignant Glioma immuno-oncology matchmaker: towards data-driven precision medicine using spatially resolved radio-multiomics.
MULTIR – MULti-Tumour based prediction and manipulation of Immune Response.
ARTURO – Assessing the role of intratumoral microbiota in therapy responses using patient-derived tumor-on-chip.
SPACETIME – SPatial Analysis of Cancer Evolution in the Tumour Immune MicroEnvironment.
HIT-GLIO – Targeting tumour-host interactions in paediatric malignant gliomas to reinvigorate immunity and improve radio- and immunotherapy efficacy.
With 2.7 million new cancer cases and 1.3 million deaths annually in Europe, the EU Cancer Mission, supported by the European Health and Digital Executive Agency (HaDEA) and Horizon Europe, is dedicated to tackling this crisis. By fostering collaboration and innovation, the Understanding Tumour-Host Interactions Cluster is set to transform cancer research and patient care, driving Europe toward a future with improved outcomes and new scientific breakthroughs.
