World Diabetes Congress 2025

At the World Diabetes Congress 2025, held from April 7 to 10, 2025, the European Liver Patient Association (ELPA) made a significant contribution through the active participation of its President, Marko Korenjak. In a well-received presentation, Korenjak addressed the often-overlooked but critical interlink between liver disease and diabetes, highlighting how metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) and other liver conditions are intricately connected to the development and progression of type 2 diabetes. Drawing from the latest scientific evidence and patient advocacy perspectives, he emphasised the need for integrated care models that recognise the overlapping pathophysiology and shared risk factors between these two major non-communicable diseases. Korenjak also underscored the importance of early screening and diagnosis, especially in high-risk populations, to prevent long-term complications and improve patient outcomes. His intervention resonated with healthcare professionals, researchers, and policymakers in attendance, reinforcing the necessity of collaborative strategies across hepatology and diabetology to address this growing public health challenge.
